Xtra Time Web Desk: Lionel Messi failed to inspire Argentina as the Albiceleste settled for a 1-1 draw against Chile in the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifiers held at Santiago del Estero on Thursday. The talisman put Argentina ahead from a spot kick in the 24th minute of the match. The hosts got a penalty after Lautaro Martínez was brought down by Maripán inside the box. The Barcelona legend made no mistake as he calmly sent Claudio Bravo the wrong way and passed the ball home from the spot:

Chile equalized 15 minutes later through Alexis Sánchez. Messi had two great opportunities to add to his tally but failed on both occasions. The first came right before halftime with a free-kick, and Leo placed it perfectly in the top corner only for Claudio Bravo to appear out of nowhere and make an amazing save:

The second half was an intense back and forth but there weren’t many chances for either side, but Messi had another free-kick in a great position with 10 minutes to go. This time he gave Bravo no chance and once again aimed for the top corner, but could only hit the crossbar.

As far as the result of the match is concerned, Messi doesn’t seem too bothered.

“It’s been a long time since we got together, it’s not easy to come back, but I think that at times we played a good game. I’m happy with the result beyond the fact that we couldn’t win,” said Messi.

He added, “Little by little we have to get stronger again”

Despite the 1-1 draw at home, Argentina remain unbeaten in five qualifying matches so far and sit in second place (11 points from 5 games) behind leaders Brazil (12 points from 4). Messi and Co. play another tough Qualifier on the road against Colombia next Tuesday, and then meet Chile again in the Copa América opener.

Earlier, before the start of the match the entire Argentine squad paid tribute to the late legendary Diego Maradona. A huge statue was unfurled outside the stadium.

Commenting on the great Maradona, Messi said, “It was a very special match because it was the first without Diego. We know what the National Team meant for him, and we know that he was present. Besides, it was special because of the situation in the country and the world, it is a very difficult situation for him. everyone”.
