Kolkata: Debjit Majumdar, the star performer for Mohun Bagan in their last year’s I-league campaign continued his terrific form this year too. For his superb performance, he was awarded the golden gloves last season in the I-League. But amidst all mind-blowing performances, he is still neglected from the Indian national team which is still a big surprise. In an interview with xtratime.in, he answered all the questions about Indian National team, Mohun Bagan and ISL.
Here are the excerpts:
XT: What is the reason behind your consistent performance for Mohun Bagan in all the tournaments?
Debjit: Hard work is the only reason behind my success. I do not get complacent at all. I always try and discuss my mistakes with my coach and try and rectify the errors.
XT: After consistent performances for the Green and Maroons in the I-League, you are still overlooked from the national team?
Debjit: I do not want to comment on that. That is not my job. My job is to perform and I will keep performing. Selection is not in my hand.
XT: Indian National team goalkeeper coach Rogerio Ramos recently said that short height goalkeeper like you will never be able to make it to the Indian team as the foreign coaches prefer tall goalkeepers. What do you want to say on that?
Debjit: Look, height is not in my hand. I cannot change that. Frankly speaking, I am not thinking of national team right now. I want to concentrate on the AFC Cup and Federation Cup for the Mariners and want to perform well in those tournaments.
XT: Last year in the ISL draft Mumbai City FC picked you up but you only played two matches when Subrata Paul kept on conceding silly goals. What do you want to say on that?
Debjit: Actually we cannot blame Subrata Paul. Mistu da played some very good matches. If you talk about conceding a lot of goals it was our defense that did not play well. We as a team did not click at all.
XT: According to sources, Atletico de Kolkata is planning to pick you this season. If you are picked how will you motivate yourself?
Debjit: It will be good to play for Kolkata. But, frankly speaking, it does not matter to me for which franchisee I play for. As I have said earlier, my job is to perform and I will keep doing that.
XT: Shilton Pal is considered as the No.1 goalkeeper for Mohun Bagan. But with your performances you have grabbed the position of No.1 goalkeeper. How will you rate yourself?
Debjit: I cannot comment on that. Shilton da is injured so I am playing in his place. There is no competition between us. Actually, I have learnt a lot from Shilton Da and try to utilize his experience.
XT: What is your say on Sanjoy Sen?
Debjit: No words for Sanjoy sir. He is like a father figure to all of us. The way he guides us is terrific. The most important thing about Sanjoy Sir is man management system. There is no ego problem in our side. Whenever I had a poor performance, he motivates me a lot.
