XtraTime Web Desk: Manchester United suffered a shock 1-2 defeat at the hands of Sevilla in the semi finals of the UEFA Europa League on Sunday night at the Rhein Energie Stadion. The Spanish side made it to their sixth Europa Cup final.

It was United who took the lead in the 9th minute after Bruno Fernandes converted a spot kick. The Red Devils were rewarded with a penalty after Marcus Rashford was fouled by Diego Carlos. Sevilla drew level with former Liverpool winger Suso finding the back of the net in the 26th minute. United had a string of chances after the break to re-take the lead – Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Fernandes and Rashford all going close to scoring. Sevilla took the lead against the run of play as Luuk de Jong tapped home the winner in the 78th minute courtesy some poor defending from Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hope of winning a trophy this season suffered a blow. United ended the Premier League season on third place and failed to make it to the final of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup earlier this season. It was the 3rd season in a row that United ended the season trophy less, their longest run since 4 successive seasons without a major trophy between 1985-89.

Five-time Europa League winners Sevilla will now face either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in Friday’s final in Cologne.
