Xtra Time Web Desk: Argentina settled for a 1-1 stalemate against Chile in their Copa America Group B opener despite taking the lead from a stunning free kick by Lionel Messi at Nelson Santos stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Monday night. Eduardo Vargas equalized for Chile after Arturo Vidal’s spot kick was blocked by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Argentina dominated the proceedings at the start and was close to taking the lead as early as 9th minute. Lautaro Martinez spooned the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box off a Giovani lo Ceslo cross. The Albiceleste kept pressing hard for the opening goal until they were rewarded with in the 33rd minute from a brilliantly taken free kick by Lionel Messi. Argentina should have extended the lead but Martinez failed yet again to score as his shot from 10 yards went wide.

Chile started the second half with more intent and Erick Pulgar played Vargas into the area but his shot on the stretch was saved by Martinez. However, Vidal stormed in to try to fire home the rebound and was caught by Tagliafico as he shot. The referee after consulting VAR awarded a penalty to Chile. Vidal’s shot from penalty was tipped by Martinez onto the crossbar but Vargas was quickest to the ball to head home the equalizer in the 57th minute.

Both sides created quite a few opportunities but failed to score as the match ended in 1-1 draw.

Earlier before the game, there was a tribute to Argentina legend Diego Maradona, although the ground was empty due to coronavirus restrictions.
