XtraTime Web Desk: Sreerupa Bose (Mukherjee), the former India women’s coach passed away on Thursday after suffering a massive heart attack.
The batswoman who was 66 is survived by her husband, Paresh Nath Mukherjee, Former Bengal Olympic Association (BOA) and her daughter Amrita Mukherjee, a tennis player.
As reported by family members, Sreerupa, the batswoman who could also bowl collapsed in her washroom in the morning. On being rushed to a nearby hospital she was declared dead.
The former Indian batswoman represented her nation in a couple of one-day Internationals and then coached her side in the ICC Women’s World Cup in 1993, 1997 and in 2000.
During 1995 she was the coach of the Indian team and when the team travelled to New Zealand for a series she notice that the then skipper Purnima Rao who had a flamboyant attitude often used to ill-treat her team mates. Bose apparently protested against Rao’s misbehavior in the dressing room and on Rao’s not paying any heed to her word’s she slapped Rao. When the Women’s Cricket Association of India looked into the matter the rest of the teammates supported Bose and Rao had to acknowledge her ill-behaviour.
The very next year in 1996, Sreerupa Bose was the National Team Selector. Indian team under the captaincy of Purnima Rao was playing a test match against England in Jamshedpur and lost the second test match owing to aggressive tactics from Rao. In the very next match Rao found herself out from the team as she was axed by Bose.
In current days, Bose is often looked up to the stature in which Diana Edulji is looked on.
