File Pic[/caption] Internet Desk: In the small ground of Navelin, Goa, despite the presence of the big Punjabi lads like Gaganjit Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh, Chandigarh fails to stop Mridul Banerjee's side, as West Bengal beat Chandigarh by a solitary goal in their first match of Santosh Trophy main stage on Sunday. The all-important goal was scored in the 88th minute when Sannik Murmu split the defence with a through pass to substitute Faiaz who raced down and after entering the box beat the rival keeper Harptritpal Singh with a low shot to the far corner of the net. West Bengal, who had better ball possession in the first half, looked more thrustful in their attack and had the first chance to take the lead but Moirangthem Basanta directed the ball straight to rival keeper Harpritpal Singh in the 15th minute. West Bengal kept pressuring on and had another chance to forge ahead five minute later but Chandigarh keeper Harpritpal once again came to his side's rescue when he blocked Rana Das’s free-kick. West Bengal footballer Basant Singh got an injury on his left eye during the match. He was taken to nearby hospital after the match by his team-management. Samad Ali Mullick, Rana Gharami and Santu Sing played brilliantly in Bengal’s defence. Sankar Roy was also rock solid on goal too. Chandigarh didn’t get much chances as Bengal’s defence played really well. Bengal will face Services in their second Group league game of Santosh Trophy on March 14.
