File Pic[/caption] Kolkata: In a bizarre turn of events, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s brothers will have a go at each other in the forthcoming elections of the Bengal Olympic Association. Both Ajit Banerjee (elder brother of Mamata) and Swapan Banerjee have filed their candidate’s nomination for the post of secretary of the association. While Ajit has nominated the name of Chandan Roy Chowdhury, Swapan has also filed his own name for the post of secretary of the association. It also brings to the forefront the dirty maidan politics with both brothers deciding to go at each other highlighting the existence of two groups in the association. The present secretary of the association Chandan Roy Chowdhury’s name was proposed for the post by the president Ajit Banerjee. This prompted a section of the association to propose Swapan’s name for the post which many insiders feel it is a battle of ego between the two brothers. Swapan Banerjee when contacted by xtratime.in defended his nomination claiming, “I do not look it as a family problem. I have a lot of respect for my brother but since the members wanted me to contest the elections, so I decided to fight for the post.” Swapan’s elder brother Ajit feels his brother is not competent to take up the post as he still needs a lot of experience. According to Ajit Banerjee, “My brother is not experienced for the post. I feel Chandan Roy Chowdhury has done well during his tenure as a secretary of the association. He is the man for the post.” Babun, who has been associated with BOA as one of the joint secretaries refuted the claims saying, “I have been associated with the BOA for the last four years and have seen closely how it works. I feel I now have the experience of handling the affairs of the association.” Swapan Banerjee was elected unopposed as the zonal secretary of the Boxing Federation of India on Sunday. He is also the secretary of Bengal Hockey Association and is the Ground Secretary of Mohun Bagan Club. Adding to his popularity with many local associations, Babun will feel confident of winning the elections. According to sources in the BOA, Swapan has the backing of key members like Asit Banerjee (Boxing), Ramanuj Mukherjee (Swimming) and Jahar Das (Baseball) who all wants to see a change in the post. Sources also confirm that Ajit Banerjee himself would like to continue as the President. The elections will be held at the Annual General Meeting scheduled to take place at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra on September 29.
