The Sports Ministry on Friday announced that the medalists from Rio Paralympics will be recommended for the coveted Padma Shri award this year for their achievements. Few days ago the ministry stated that the paralympians cannot be awarded with the Khel Ratna award as it was not on par with Olympics. “Sports Ministry will recommend the names of our star #Paralympians to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the prestigious #PadmaAwards,” Sports Minister Vijay Goel announced on a social media.

India won four medals at the Paralympics held earlier this month in Rio. Thangavelu Mariyappan (High Jump) and Devendra Jhajharia (Javelin Throw) won gold medals where Jhajharia  broke his previous world record in Rio Paralympics, while Deepa Malik (Shot put) had claimed a silver. Varun Singh Bhati (High Jump) had won a bronze medal for India. The para-athletes were welcomed warmly on their return from Rio to home and were hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence.
