File Pic.[/caption] Kolkata: Former India opening batsman Devang Gandhi considers it to be a huge honour to be appointed in the selection committee. Debang, who is currently the chairman of the selection committee of senior Bengal team considers it be a very challenging role and a responsible one as well. "With Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli as captains along with Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid as chief coaches of senior and A team, the BCCI has put a fantastic structure in place. These are the main guys who are taking Indian cricket forward. As a selector our job will be to complement this core team. At least that's how I look at it," the 45-year-old former India opener said. Debang first got the news of his appointment from none other than Sourav Ganguly. The President of Cricket Association of Bengal played a key role in getting Debang appointed in the selection committee. “Yes, it was Sourav who called me up from Mumbai and gave the news. I was anxious about my appointment as there were several others also in the running for the post. He was the first one to congratulate me after my appointment.” The former cricketer from Bengal was part of the Indian test team that played a series against New Zealand team at home. The current Indian coach Anil Kumble was part of that team in 1999. Later they both were included in the test squad that toured Australia. “I feel Indian cricket is in safe pair of hands under Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble. Someone like Anil, who I played with, is a very positive person. He is someone who you can rely on as he is born fighter. Virat also has a similar mindset, never say die attitude. Both are very positive individuals and have a very aggressive mindset.” Debang might have to give in the role of chairman of the selection committee of Bengal as he feel, “I might have to step down as it will be doing injustice to Cricket Association of Bengal as I cannot give enough time for the Bengal cricketers.” There will be a huge expectation from the cricketing fraternity of Bengal on Debang who had played 4 Tests and 95 first-class matches. "I have been a cricketer from Bengal but now I have to look at the bigger picture. It is not about the zones or the states. It's about who are the best players to represent India," said the former Bengal captain. He further added, “I would expect the Bengal cricketers to do well in all conditions. Our players also need to start performing if they want to break into the Indian team.” Gandhi said that his time as chief selector of Bengal and subsequently as a commentator in BCCI's domestic panel has helped him over the years. "One needs to be diligent with his homework and for that you have to have a fair knowledge about domestic cricket. When I was the chairman of Bengal's senior selection committee, I have watched a lot of domestic matches. It helped me keep a tab on who are the performers in national circuit. "Then I was doing commentary for the past few seasons during domestic tournaments like Ranji, Duleep, Deodhar and Irani Cup. This has helped me get first-hand knowledge about the scenario in domestic cricket. It should surely help me," said Devang. The Board of Control for Cricket in India today at its AGM selected the senior selection committee headed by former India cricketer MSK Prasad. The five member selection committee also has Gagan Khoda, Sarandeep Singh, Debang Gandhi and Jatin Paranjpe.
