Nayeem Qadir Bhatt, who sustained firearm injuries, succumbed to death after being taken to hospital. Nayeem, a student in Government Degree College, Handwara was famous for his extraordinary performance in the state-level Under-19 cricket competition. He was the first cricketer to be selected for Under-19 cricket coaching camp from the northern district of Kupwara. As a youngster Nayeem dreamt of playing for India one day and had his room decorated with pictures of his favourite cricketers including Parvez Rasool, who is the only cricketer from the valley to represent India. According to Nayeem’s childhood friends, he was always a cricket crazy boy. He was recently declared the best player in a district tournament. Nayeem’s family is in utter shock. “Cricket was his passion. He would travel to Baramulla Degree College to practice, which is 30 kilometre from here, almost three days a week and played for a local club,” commented Nayeem’s Cousin Farooq Ahmad. “His dream was to play for India,” Amir added.
