Earlier, Bhaichung contested from Darjeeeling in 2014 Lok Sabha Polls for TMC but lost to Surinder Ahluwalia of BJP. Bhaichung seems to be surprise with the decision to contest from Siliguri. He quoted as saying, ” I was a bit surprise with this decision. Franklyn speaking, I was not informed from before. If I was  informed, I would have prepared myself likewise. But as I am a footballer, I will always obey the rules of my captain (Didi). If she wants me to play as a  forward, I will do so and if she wants to operate as a winger , I will do so.” Regarding Bhaichung’s campaign, the striker added, “I am not sure from when the campaign will begin but it’s a good sign that footballers are coming forward and joining politics. We footballers have played individual games till the time we played, but now it’s time to work together for the people.” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also high hopes on Bhaichung Bhutia. She quoted as saying, "Bhaichung will be a good candidate. He has got transparent views. it dies not count he is experience  or not." Nabi, the most utility player who is contesting from Pandua is currently playing for Mumbai FC in the I-league. Question arises, how will he give time to both? Nabi replied,” I will speak to my coach (Khalid Jamil) regarding my campaign and all. According to me both are important.  But my identity to the people of Bengal comes first as a footballer.” Rumours are there that Pandua is a region where TMC groupism counts high. Will it be a barrier to your campaign? Nabi replied saying, “ I want to work with everyone. Hope it won’t be any problem” Former Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla who is contesting from North Howrah is over whelmed with the decision. He quoted as saying, “ Happy to contest in the election and really looking looking forward to work for the people.” Vaishali Dalmiya, daughter of Former BCCI President Late Jagmohan Dalmiya is also contesting in the Assembly election from Bally.
