Recalling the intense moment, Kohli remarked, "First Test, first ball of the tour. He hit me on the head. And was in disbelief. I had been visualising how I would play in this series for the past 60 days. And suddenly, there was a complete change of plans. It was a heavy blow. My vision started dropping, I had swelling. There were 2 deliveries remaining before lunch, that I played.” He further elaborated on his response, revealing his resolve to retaliate with formidable batting performances throughout the series.

Kohli's determination bore fruit as he fulfilled his pledge on the field. In the absence of then-captain MS Dhoni, Kohli not only led the team but also showcased his batting prowess by scoring centuries in both innings of the first Test (115 & 141). Despite his outstanding efforts, India faced a narrow 48-run defeat in the game.
