Much similar to the Laureus World Sports Awards the Indian Sports personalities are to be now honoured with “The Indian Sports Honours”. The initiative has been taken up by the Sanjiv Goenka’s RP-SG Group and the Virat Kohli Foundation to honour sports persons from different fields. A total of 17 awards of different discipline would be presented to Sports personnel which involves, Sports Man of the Year (Individual Sports), Sports Man of the Year (Team Sports), Sports Woman of the Year (Individual Sports), Sports Woman of the Year (Team Sports), Emerging Sports Man of the Year, Emerging Sports Woman of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Spirit of Sport Award and others.

The Award ceremony would be held on November 11 at Mumbai. A jury has also been appointed to select the winners and the head of the jury is Former All India Champion, Pullela Gopichand. Other members of the jury involve, multiple Grandslam winner Mahesh Bhupati, Legendary Athlete PT Usha, Former World Number One Sharp Shooter Anjali Bhagawat and former Indian Hockey captain Arjun Halappa.

“We are seeing a change in the manner in which sport is being pursued in our country. More and more individuals are looking at it in terms of a full time career. The most effective way in which to inspire the sports person is to excel in the sport they play. Indians are outdoing their counterparts from other nations on the international stage and if there is a special talent in the country it is our duty to nurture it. There should be a dedicated process for the same” said Gopichand.

An interesting fact that has come to light is that Anil Kumble’s name has been involved in the Best Coach award list.

“This initiative is fantastic. As sportsperson and coaches are an inspiration. Sportsmen aspire for awards. Feel honoured to be part of the jury. I hope this awards will inspire a lot of people. In last few years sports has taken a centre stage. Awards like this will inspire and motivate every sportsman” added Gopichand.

“Having an awards at the end of the season inspires the youth. It will definitely Italy create an aspiration for achieving more”said Mahesh Bhupati.

“Sportsmen bring laurels for the country. It will keep the consistency we needed such awards” said Anjali Bhagawat.

“The Indian Sports honours is a big initiative, it is about recognizing the individuals and teams who have excelled and it is about taking their stories to hundreds and thousands of people so these inspirations are not lost. Virat and I are doing it together as both of us are involved. India has been waiting for this for a long time and these would be getting bigger and bigger with each passing year” said Sanjiv Goenka.
