This Day, that year : A look at the heroes of inaugural World T20 champions

Internet Desk : Today on this day India won the first T-20 World cup under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. India defeated arch rivals Pakistan by 5 runs in the final played at the Wanderers stadium. Irfan Pathan was adjudged Man of the match for taking 3 wickets for 16 runs in his stipulated 4 overs. India won the toss and chose to bat first on a batting friendly pitch at the Wanderers Stadium. Gautam Gambhir scored a brilliant 75 runs off 54 balls to help India post a competitive total of 157/5 in 20 overs. In reply Pakistan fell short by 5 runs. Pakistan needing just 6 runs to win from the last four balls failed to reach the target. Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq attempted to hit a paddle scoop of Yoginder Sharma for six, only to find out Sreesanth fielding at short fine leg.

As the country celebrates the first T20 World Cup , xtratime.in takes a quick look at the Indian players who were part of that World Cup winning Squad and what are they doing now. Apart from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma rest of the players did not feature in the last T 20 World cup which was played in the country.

Gautam Gambhir: He was the second highest run scorer in the tournament with 227 runs in 7 matches. Presently Gambhir is playing for Delhi in first class cricket and battling to make his way in the national team.

Robin Uthappa: The middle order batsman is now an integral part of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He had a mixed performance with the bat with 113 runs in 7 matches. Uthappa is presently playing for Karnataka Ranji Trophy team.

Irfan Pathan: The all-rounder was the Man of the Match in the Final against Pakistan. He took 10 wickets in 7 matches in the tournament. Irfan is presently playing for Baroda Ranji team and is also a key member of Rising Super Giants team in the IPL.

Joginder Sharma: Presently Superintendent of Police in the Haryana Police force. He was the hero of the T’20 final. He took the final wicket of Misbah-Ul-Haq and won the cup for India in the final over.

S.Sreesanth: The fast bowler from Kerala didn’t fare well in the whole tournament with his bowling taking only 6 wickets in 7 matches with best of 2/20. But he became a National hero by grabbing the final catch to dismiss in form Pakistan captain in the final over.
