Sabyasachi Bagchi: Indian cricket’s young sensation Prithvi Shaw made a sensational test debut on Thursday as he scored 134 runs from just 154 deliveries in the first test against the Windies in Rajkot. He hit total 19 boundaries during his stay and destroyed the bowling of the visitors. His childhood coaches and family are very emotional after his remarkable feat. Here are some reactions from those who are close to him.

Dilip Vengsarkar; Former Captain, India: I saw him first when he was just 8 years old. Thanks to one of my friend I saw him. You don’t believe during the Kanga League match, many cricket fanatics went out early from their office to see him play. After watching his batting I told the chief selector of Mumbai Milind Rege to take Prithvi in the Ranji team during the 2016-17 season as the team didn’t playing well at that time. Most of the seniors were out of form and I told them to give young Prithvi a chance to play Ranji. We had the history of giving youngsters a chance in the team, like we did to Sachin Tendulkar, Amal Majumder, Vinod Kambli & others. I am not surprised to see his century today. It might also happened at the Oval in London if the team management gave him the chance there. My belief is that a player like Prithvi could hit his maiden ton in England as well. I am very happy today and I know he has all the capabilities to become a great cricketer. I wish him all the luck.

Chandrakant Pandit; Former Coach, Mumbai Ranji Team: He had the talent since his childhood days. At this level when a player scores a century in his debut test by following the approach which he has since the childhood; that is something great. He always plays fearless cricket with high confidence. He has this belief because he has scored runs against all the teams that he had faced so far. In his debut as well he never looked in any kind of tension. He is a cricketer from Mumbai and here most of the cricketers are mentally very strong. He has become stronger when he was in India A and India U19 team under the guidance of legendary Rahul Dravid.

Pankaj Shaw, Father of Prithvi Shaw: You can call me a superstitious person but I can’t do anything about that. When he made his Ranji debut back in 2016-17 season I didn’t go to watch his game and again today also I didn’t see him play because whenever I go to see his game he got out quickly. Earlier as I said, he is getting everything in his life but me and Prithvi always will miss one person and that is his mother. She had breathed her last when Prithvi was just four years of age.

Praveen Amreh, Former Indian cricketer: It is again proved that Mumbai has always produced tough cricketers for the nation. Whatever the opponent would be, there will always be a pressure on the debutante.  I have seen a lot of batsman scoring a lot of runs in domestic cricket, but when they came to international cricket they failed to take the pressure of the game. But in Prithvi I have never seen any tension. Watching him playing the aggressive brand of cricket, I was just thinking about young Sachin Tendulkar as he just used to bat the same way. When Sachin used to bat, all the attention was on him, Prithvi is just like the same. I want do give a lot of credit to Rahul Dravid for Prithvi’s rise as in his guidance Prithvi has become a complete cricketer.

Raju Pathak, Prthivi Shaw’s childhood coach: He came to me when he was at third standard. I am very happy today. He hit a century in his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy debut and now he has scored a ton in his test ton. He is a very composed cricketer with cool brain. He is always ready for any opponent. Today he played against the Windies, if he gets a chance against any other sides like Australia, England he would play the same way. He doesn’t take any added pressure on himself if it’s a domestic game or an international game. I had a word with him a couple of days back. I told him if you get a chance in the playing XI give your best without taking any pressure.
