Gambhir warned of tough transition period if appointed Indian head coach
Xtra Time Web Desk: With Team India poised to undergo a significant transitional phase after the T20 World Cup, Gautam Gambhir, mentor of IPL 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders, has emerged as the front-runner to take over as head coach. Known for his aggressive attitude and bold decisions, Gambhir faces the daunting task of preparing the team for the 2027 World Cup if he secures the role.
The upcoming change in the coaching staff, replacing Rahul Dravid and his team, signals a new era for Indian cricket. Gambhir's proven track record as a big-match player and successful tactician in the IPL makes him a strong candidate. He played crucial roles in India's victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup finals. Should Gambhir be appointed, one of his immediate challenges will be managing the transition of key players who are on the wrong side of 30, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Aakash Chopra highlighted the difficulties associated with this transition: "Managing the transition here will be interesting and never easy. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, maybe Ravindra Jadeja, especially their roles in T20s, there are plenty of people who are on the wrong side of 30, 35 to 37, including Ravichandran Ashwin."

While WV Raman has also been interviewed for the head coach position, Gambhir is widely believed to be the preferred choice. The official announcement is expected by the end of the T20 World Cup, with the new head coach set to begin his tenure with India's T20I tour of Zimbabwe.
