Sabyasachi Bagchi: The match between India and Kenya have already ended more than 12 hrs back, but the parents of Indian Football team captain Sunil Chhetri are still in an intense of the game. They are really proud of their son who played his 100th game for the nation and Kharag Chhetri and Sushila Chhetri are happier because they were present in the ground when Sunil achieved the feat.

While talking to www.xtratime.in from Mumbai, Sunil’s father Kharag Chhetri said,” I am getting a lot of phone calls after the game. Everyone is congratulating me. This is the first time that I have got so many calls. All the credits goes to Sunil as only because of him I am getting these messages. After the game I met Sunil and hugged him and congratulated him for his remarkable feat.”

The fans filled the gallery of the Andheri Sports Complex gallery last night with placards like ‘One King, One Leader, One Legend- Sunil Chhetri. Beside that Sunil’s parents and wife Sonam were present at the ground wearing jerseys of Sunil Chhetri which had a caption of ‘Sunil 100’. Like the champions, Sunil picked the milestone game to show his class where he scored a brace to make the nation proud. The fans cheered his name all the time which gave a lot of confidence to him as well. Sunil’s father who is an ex army man as well said,” When we caught the flight on Monday, we had a belief that Sunil will do something special against Kenya and thanks to god’s grace he has done remarkably well last night. He has done a lot of hard work since his childhood days and I am happy that his hard work finally paid off.  As his father and mother we are really very proud.”

India doesn’t belong at the elite class of world football, but the nation’s captain is on third of the active goal scorers list behind the greats like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. But Sunil’s father doesn’t want to think about this. He said,” Now my son is getting success and everyone is praising him, but at one stage a lot of people criticized him for his height. Sunil is a fighter and he answered back to all his critics today with his performance.

On being asked about Sunil’s childhood, Kharag Chhetri said,” As I had a transferable job we had to travel a lot. Once we were in New Delhi where I discovered that Sunil’s liking of playing cricket. As me and my wife both were admirers of sports, both of us wanted Sunil to become a sportsperson. But Sunil didn’t move that much with cricket on that time due to my financial problems. I used to get eight thousand rupees during that time and I didn’t have money to buy him expensive bats and other thinks which is essential for any cricketer. Sunil knew that really well and he didn’t force us as well for anything.”

The Indian football is lucky that Sunil didn’t become a cricketer, otherwise he didn’t get the opportunity of playing his 100th international game for the nation. The football fanatics of India as well as across the world didn’t get the opportunity of seeing Sunil’s 61 goals too.
