He will be playing his last professional match for his club Kalighat against Mohun Bagan in the final of the P. Sen trophy on Monday. Strongly built and possessing a bustling action, Shib Sankar Paul first caught the eye with consistent performances for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. When the selectors gave him a chance on the tour of East Africa in August 2004, he impressed many observers with his composure, ability to hit the deck hard and prise out the best of the opposition batsmen. He offers a workhorse option that the Indian team lacks, and was rewarded with a call-up into India's Test squad for the fourth Test against Australia at Mumbai, in 2004-05. "Maco", nickname of Shib Sankar Paul made his debut for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy in the 2000-01 season against Tripura at the Eden Gardens under the captaincy of Devang Gandhi. His last first class match was against Karnataka in Kolkata in the 2014-15 season and his last List A being against Saurashtra in Vizag in 2008. During the 2006 when England toured India, Maco got the wicket of Marcus Trescothick in a practice match for the Board President XI. Maco bowled an outswinger to get Marcus out clean bowled. On the same year, he produced a magnificent performance for the Board President XI when he got the wickets of Kamran Akmal, Mohammed Yousuf and Imran Farhat of Pakistan. He shared the dressing room with three batting legends of India Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. He regarded that moment as one of the best moment of his life. Maco will always the cherish the wicket of VVS Laxman in the Ranji Trophy which was his 100th first class wicket. In the 2005-06 Ranji trophy season where Bengal was runners up, the Bengal speedster played a match with high fever against Baroda and scalped five wickets in the very first innings of the match. Maco was nostalgic about his first meeting with Sourav Ganguly. He said, "I could not meet Dadi in the first season but I met him the 2002-03 season. I was very shy to speak to him. But he made me free. In that match Dadi too 6 wickets while I could take only 3 wickets. SS Paul later said about his retirement, "I have no regrets about not getting chance in the national team. In the future, I am planning to engage myself in coaching but not yet planning to open a academy. I would love to coach Bengal team as a bowling consultant in the future if CAB asks me to do so." Maco scalped 220 first class wickets for Bengal in the 61 matches he played for and he scalped 86 wickets for the same number of matches he represented Bengal in the list A format.
