Rio 2016: Saina starts Olympic run as 5th seed, Srikanth and Sindhu 9th

Internet Desk: Olympic Bronze winning shuttler will start her Rio Olympics being the fifth seed. As the World Ranking declares women’s single’s shuttler P. V. Sindhu will be 9th seed as well as Kidambi Srikanth is the 9th seed in the men’s singles.

The World Ranking released today declares the positions of world badminton players according to which the draw of the Olympics will be settled. The draw will be announced on 26th July.

According to the World Ranking Carolina Marin will be the top seed while Wang Yihan is 2nd and defending Olympic champion Li Xuerui is the 3rd seed in the women’s singles. Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia is the top seed of men’s singles. Lee, runner-up at the last two Olympics and winner of two MetLife BWF World Super series titles this season, is followed in the seeding by two-time World champion Chen Long(2nd seed) and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan(3rd seed).

Each single’s category has 13 seeds. There are only four seeds in each of the three doubles categories. The Men’s Singles draw will consist of 41 players in 13 groups while, in Women’s Singles, 40 competitors will be divided into 13 groups; each group will have one seed. The draw in doubles will have four groups of four pairs; each group will include a seeded pair.

Indian men’s and women’s doubles players are not among any of the top four seeds. However, Indian badminton coach is not looking for any seed. Pullela Gopichand has already has declared that his team is looking for medals and preparing for their games only.
