Xtratime Webdesk: From battling polio since the age of seven to winning three Asian Para Games gold medals, Neeraj Yadav’s journey was one of remarkable resilience and sporting achievement. The 42-year-old para-athlete’s inspiring story, however, has ended on a tragic note. He was reportedly found dead at his Delhi residence. Initial reports suggest he consumed poison, with the circumstances surrounding his death still being investigated.
Neeraj Yadav's journey into athletics came after years of pursuing wheelchair tennis. Yadav competed in wheelchair tennis between 2005 and 2012 before turning to para-athletics. His breakthrough came at the 2015 Delhi State Athletics Meet, where he won gold in shot put, javelin and discus, setting the foundation for an international career.
Yadav first tasted success(on the international stage) at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, where he won gold in the men’s F55 javelin throw with an Asian record of 29.84 metres. Five years later, at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, he added two more gold medals, triumphing in javelin and discus. Those performances took his Asian Para Games gold tally to three.
But the later years brought a difficult turn. Yadav was caught up in an anti-doping case after an out-of-competition sample collected in Bengaluru in October 2023 tested positive for a prohibited anabolic steroid. He disputed the result and sought further examination of the sample. The subsequent suspension kept him out of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games in 2026.
On Wednesday, the para-sports community received the tragic news of Yadav’s death at the age of 42. Reports said he allegedly consumed poison at his Delhi residence. The exact circumstances surrounding his death were still being established, and a postmortem examination was underway.
For Indian para-sport, however, Yadav’s sporting legacy stretches beyond the difficult final chapter of his life. From living with the effects of polio since childhood to standing on the Asian Para Games podium three times, his journey remains a story of determination, ambition and achievement.
