Xtra Time Web Desk: England test captain Joe Root on Friday said his best is still to come. Root, who has been one of the most consistent batsmen in world cricket in 2021, has so far amassed close to 800 runs in 12 innings at an average of almost 67. He scored two double hundreds, one coming against India in the first test at Chennai. In an interview to Daily Mail, the England captain claimed his best is yet to come and he wants to score big hundreds to help his team win

“I certainly feel the best is still to come. I want to have more series like the start of this winter, and produce those big hundreds which help you win series. I’m hungry to make the next phase of my career the peak,” Root said to Daily Mail.

According to Root, “I’ve worked very hard on a few aspects of my game, the mental side as well as technical. I feel a lot more in control, and like I’m playing the ball much later. That, for me, is the art of batting – if you can keep your head and hands as close together as possible, you give yourself a better chance. Hopefully, I can have a bumper year.”

The Yorkshire batsman did not hide his disappointment of losing the test series 1-3 to India after going 1-0 up in Chennai.

“I feel I’ve grown a lot in the past year or so, and now have a good handle on things. I was obviously disappointed with the way India finished, but I do feel we’re making big strides as a Test group, and we’re coming into an exciting phase of games, which could really see us flourish,” said Root.

Root will have an opportunity to avenge the series loss to India as both sides face against each other in a five test series starting from August 4.
