Brisbane : Australia have decided to rest all-rounder Mitchell Marsh for the second ODI against India in Brisbane. The all rounder have been given an extra day’s rest at home in Perth citing the management of his workload ahead in the series and forthcoming tours. The all-rounder will however join the squad for the third ODI in Melbourne confirmed Australia’s chairman of selectors Rod Marsh.
“Mitch is a tremendous asset to Australian cricket and we are conscious of managing his workload and his travel, especially with so much cricket to come during the rest of this summer and beyond,” he said. “By taking this decision we have opted to give him an extra day at home in Perth after match one, before he flies to Melbourne on Thursday to prepare for Sunday’s third match of the series.”
Elaborating on John Hastings – Marsh’s replacement for the second ODI, Rod Marsh said, “In John Hastings we have a high-quality replacement; a player who has been in excellent form in the Big Bash League. John also showed his quality with a match-winning spell of 3 for 21 in the decisive one-day international of the series against England in Manchester in September, so we know what he can do if called upon.
“At this stage John will be with the squad only for the second ODI but should we suffer any injuries to our bowlers in Brisbane, we may look at retaining his services for longer.”
Hastings was excited to be a part of the Australia squad and wanted to make the most of the opportunity. “I was a little bit disappointed to not be in the initial squad, but I understand why the selectors want to go for youth and test these guys out,” Hastings said. “I get my chance now, so hopefully I can go in and grasp it with both hands.”
