Xtra Time Web Desk: The India National Cricket Team's 12-year streak at the Maharashtra Cricket Association in Pune came to an abrupt end as they suffered a disheartening 113-run loss to New Zealand in the second Test of the series. This defeat, coupled with a disappointing performance in Bengaluru, leaves India trailing 2-0 in the three-match series.

From the outset, India struggled, conceding a first-innings lead of over 100 runs. New Zealand capitalized, setting a daunting target of 359 runs for the Rohit Sharma-led side. However, India's batting lineup faltered again, collapsing for just 245 runs.

The loss significantly impacted India's standing in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table, with their points percentage (PCT) dropping from 68.06% to 62.82%. While India currently tops the table, their path to the WTC final has become precarious, especially with five overseas matches on the horizon.

Currently, India leads Australia by a narrow margin, with the Pat Cummins-led side at 62.50%. With six games remaining—one against New Zealand and five against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25—India must secure a win in their next match to stay in contention for the WTC final.

To qualify directly for the final, India needs to win at least four of their remaining six matches. A victory in the upcoming match at Wankhede Stadium, starting November 1, is crucial. They can afford to lose only one match, while winning five would elevate their PCT to 71.05%. Six victories would bring them to 170 points and a commanding PCT of 74.56%.

India's chances hinge not only on their performance but also on the results of competing teams, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
