Xtra Time Web Desk: With the official announcement of India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 expected soon, reports suggest that the leadership roles are nearly finalized. According to reports, Rohit Sharma is set to captain the team, continuing his successful tenure, while Jasprit Bumrah is poised to take up the vice-captaincy, provided he recovers from injury in time for the tournament.

Rohit, who guided India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup with stellar performances both as a leader and batsman, remains the obvious choice for captaincy. However, the decision to entrust Bumrah with the vice-captaincy has raised eyebrows due to the frequent changes in the role in recent years.

During the Rahul Dravid era, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul often shared vice-captaincy duties. Shubman Gill also had a brief stint as vice-captain under Gautam Gambhir's mentorship but is reportedly out of contention now.

Bumrah, who captained India to a memorable Test win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has proven his leadership abilities on the field. His potential appointment as vice-captain highlights the selectors’ confidence in his tactical acumen and influence.

However, his availability for the Champions Trophy remains uncertain after sustaining an injury during the final Test against Australia. He is also doubtful for the ODI series against England in February, just weeks before the Champions Trophy kicks off.

If Bumrah is unable to play, the selectors may face a tough decision in naming an alternative vice-captain, reigniting debates about the team’s leadership structure.
