Xtra Time Web Desk: India’s captain Rohit Sharma has clarified his decision to miss the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground, addressing speculation surrounding his absence. Speaking during the lunch break on Day 2 to Star Sports, Rohit dismissed claims that he was dropped, stating it was his decision to step aside for the team’s benefit.

The skipper’s form had been under scrutiny throughout the series, with Rohit managing only 31 runs across five innings at an average of 6.20. Heading into the crucial Test with India trailing 1-2, his performances faced criticism from fans and experts alike. In Sydney, Jasprit Bumrah took over as captain, with Shubman Gill replacing Rohit in the playing XI.

During the interview, Rohit revealed his discussions with coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar before making the decision. "I stood down. I will say one thing, and it will have 50 interpretations," Rohit joked. "I had a chat with the coach and the selector. I’m not making runs at the moment. I’m not in form, and this is an important game. We need an in-form player. Our batting order isn’t in form, so out-of-form players can’t carry the team right now. It was my understanding, and they backed my call."

The move to drop himself underscores Rohit’s selflessness and team-first mindset during a challenging phase for Indian cricket. His replacement, Gill, was brought in to strengthen the struggling batting lineup.

Rohit ended the conversation with a lighthearted remark when the presenter expressed admiration for his captaincy. "I'm not going anywhere (laughs)," he said, putting to rest any rumors about retirement.

While Rohit acknowledged his form struggles, he firmly stated in the same interview that retirement is not on the cards just yet. His decision highlights his commitment to the team and the importance of prioritizing India’s success over personal milestones.
