The league which is next to the Premier League in terms of popularity wants to capture the huge Indian market. The launch programme was attended by none other than the La Liga President Javier Tebas along with former Real Madrid star and ambassador of the league Fernando Morientes. Also in attendance was the Spanish Davis Cup team who are now in the capital to take part in the Davis Cup tie against India was also present at the function. India will be the sixth international operational base for the La Liga. The league has already established operational bases in the United States, South Africa, Dubai, Nigeria and China. The programme seeks to increase the popularity of the Spanish football league and Spanish clubs in India. The La Liga president Tebas was confident that the launch of La Liga's operations in India will be beneficial for the development of football in the country. "It means a lot, this is one of the most important days in La Liga's history. Being present in India is very important to us. We have been working hard towards this for a while and have even made changes to kick-off times with Indian fans in mind," he was quoted as saying in a statement. "I want to highlight the efforts of Sony, our broadcaster in this country. We've got to grow together if we are to become the best. I hope that our new office will enable us to achieve our dreams," he added. "We want to share our knowledge with India's young people and we will also be contributing to training coaches. That will play an important role for us and the future of Indian football alike." Former Real Madrid star Fernando Morientes, who was present at the event in the capacity of La Liga ambassador, said, “Many of my friends have played in India and I am really happy to be here. Football has been a huge part of my life and it has brought a lot of joy. I hope to motivate a lot of Indian players and see them do well in the years to come.” In keeping in mind with the huge Indian audience the league organizers has made the announcement of keeping the kick off time at 4:30 pm IST.
