Xtra Time Web Desk : Former Team India captain and selector Dilip Vengsarkar opines that Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been in stupendous form in this year's Vijay Hazare Trophy and in all forms of cricket over the last one year, should be picked by the selectors for the ODI team with immediate effect.

In an interview with TOI on Sunday, the Mumbaikar said, "You must pick a man in form. How many more runs does he need to score to prove himself ? It is high time the selectors pick him straight away and give him a proper opportunity,"

Speaking about the fierce competition for opening slots in white ball cricket with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Ishan Kishan all being in the mix, the former Team India selector added, "He can bat at No 3 also. He must be accommodated in the team. It's not like Ruturaj 18 or 19. He's 24 now. There's no point in picking him when he'll be 28."

However, Dilip Vengsarkar was the chairman of the selection committee when Virat Kohli got selected into the team in 2008. Also, it was the Mumbaikar who spotted Ruturaj when he was 10 years old and took him to Lancashire for exposure. It would now be interesting to see if the current crop of Team India selectors take note of Vengsarkar's words and select the IPL 2021 orange cap winner into the team.
