Xtra Time Web Desk: Match 7 of IPL 2024, a run galore for the defending champions Chennai Super Kings, as they put up a mammoth total of 206, defeated the IPL 2023 runners up Gujarat Titans by 63 runs at the Chepauk stadium, Chennai on 26 April.

Newly appointed GT captain Shubman Gill chose to bowl winning the toss, but it seemed his decision backfired. As his side could only manage to score 143 runs in 20 overs while chasing 207.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is a champ against pace. He is comfortable on both the front foot and the back foot. Once he was set, he was unafraid to loft the ball. Gaikward looked totally controlled throughout his innings and went on scoring 46 off 36 deliveries. 62 runs opening stand between the captain and Rachin Ravindra (46 off 20) laid a solid foundation for their side. Sameer Rizvi, a rising star from Uttar Pradesh amazed everyone as he played a blinder in the very first ball on his IPL debut, that too of Afghan spin king Rashid Khan. Shivam Dube blazed 51 off 23 balls in the death overs. Contribution came from all the Chennai batters as they punished all the Gujarat bowlers in the first innings.

Unlike the CSK batters the GT batters had short live on the wicket. Not a single batter could cross the 30+ mark except for Sai Sudarshan (37). Gujarat lost both their openers Gill (8) and Wriddhiman Saha (21) within the powerplay. Chennai bowlers kept on taking wicket in regular intervals, didn’t give the GT batters to settle. Tushar Deshpande and Deepak Chahar both scalped couple of wickets. 1 wicket each for Daryl Mitchell, Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana.

In the battle of the young skippers, CSK captain came as the victor. Gaikward who had home advantage at Chepauk was top notch with his captaincy skill, while the opposition captain Gill looked a little lost while his side was bowling. CSK broke their jinx of never winning a match against GT in group stage. One the other hand, GT could not avenge their last season’s defeat in the finals from CSK. Looks like GT has to wait for the reverse fixture to do so.
