IPL 2020: Mumbai Indians Rahul Chahar leading a band of young leg spinners

XtraTime Web Desk: Mumbai Indians leg spinner Rahul Chahar is living up to the expectations in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). The young bowler from Rajasthan has been a revelation in this IPL, spinning a web against the opponent batsmen. Chahar is currently third in the list of highest wicket takers after Mohammad Shami (8) and Kagiso Rabada (7) in this edition of IPL. The talented spinner has so far picked 6 wickets at an average of 19.83 with an impressive economy rate of 7.43. The youngster has been entrusted with bowling in the power-play overs by MI Captain Rohit Sharma and more than often he has not disappointed.

Talking about the background of Rahul Chahar, cricket runs in his genes. His elder brother Deepak plies his trade with the Chennai Super Kings. Deepak had an impressive debut in first class when he picked up 8 wickets on his Ranji debut and helped Rajasthan skittle out Hyderabad for 21. Rahul though decided to be a leggie. At a very young age, Rahul decided to sacrifice his studies and devote his full attention to cricket. His uncle and elder brother helped him nurture his talent over the years. He graduated nicely through age-level cricket and finally had the chance to represent India U19. He made his first-class debut for Rajasthan in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy in November 2016.

Following a few noteworthy performances with the ball in domestic cricket, Rahul was roped in by IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants for INR 10 lakhs in 2017. It was a great learning experience for him as he shared the dressing room with the likes of MS Dhoni and Steve Smith. The following season he was brought by Mumbai Indians. He was fortunate to get 13 out of the 16 matches played by Mumbai Indians 2019 IPL season. He picked 13 wickets in the season with a best figure of 3/19 against Rajasthan Royals.

Despite the presence of senior spinner like Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar is winning the confidence of the team management with his leg spin bowling.
