India missed clean sweep against South Korea in Davis Cup

Internet Desk: The world group play off was confirmed yesterday. Today it was to see whether India could do the clean sweep winning the all five matches against South Korea. However, a defeat of Ramkumar Ramanathan made India miss the whitewash.

Rohan Bopanna won the doubles yesterday along with Leander. That match confirmed the ticket of India to the world group. India won the previous two singles on Friday. After the doubles’ win it was 3-0 for India. However, India took the two matches as their challenge to make 5-0.

After the doubles match Rohan Bopanna was on for the singles against Hong Chung. It was a long time after India watched Rohan to play a singles match. After four years Rohan played a Davis Cup singles. However, the last singles he played was a win for him.

Today at the starting of the match Rohan was looking a little feeble and he lost the first set. However, he regained himself from the second set and won the match by 3-6 6-4 6-4. After the win of Rohan in the fourth match Indian tennis ace Leander Paes tweeted the victory dance of Indian team.

Still India did not take the last match lightly. The last match of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yong-Kyu Lim prolonged for more than two hours and Ramkumar gave a good fight. However, a loss to world no. 409 for Ramkumar is a misfortune. He won the first set by 3-6. But later lost by 6-4, 6-7(2).

Last time in 2015 India lost in the World Group play-off. Otherwise India’s best performance in Davis Cup was in 2011 when India reached the World Group. The opponent of World Group play off is yet to be decided. Before the Rio Olympics this win will be a booster for the players.
