India at Tokyo Olympics: Neeraj Chopra throws astonishing 87.58m to win gold; gives the country its first medal in athletics
Anilava Chatterjee, Tokyo: India’s Neeraj Chopra made history at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday as the javelin thrower won gold in javelin throw at the National Stadium in Tokyo. Neeraj threw an astonishing 87.58m in his second throw. It was the first medal for independent India in athletics.
After the first three rounds Neeraj led the table with 87.58m followed by Czech Republic’s Vitezslav Vesely (85.44m), Germany’s Julian Webber (85.30m) and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem (84.62m).
Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won silver by throwing 86.67m while his compatriot Vitezslav Vesely threw 85.44M to settle for bronze.
