ICC CWC 2019: No more demerit points for Virat Kohli

Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian captain Virat Kohli is in no trouble as reported in certain sections of the media and is absolutely fine, heading into the semi-finals of the World Cup after his side defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs at Edgbaston. Normally if any cricketer is found guilty of an offence, the International Cricket Council (ICC) sends a release within 24 hours of the incident after getting the verdict from match referee.

During the match against Bangladesh, Kohli was seen involved in an argument with on field umpire after India lost its review. In the 12th over of the Bangladesh chase, Shami appealed against Soumya Sarkar after hitting him on the pads. Umpire Marias Erasmus ruled the decision in favour of Sarkar.

Kohli decided to go for a review. Television replays showed that the ball was hitting Sarkar’s bat and pad at the same time. Thus, third umpire Aleem Dar decided to stay with the on-field umpire’s decision and India went onto lose their review. Kohli, who seemed to believe that the ball had hit the pad first, was evidently unhappy with the decision and started arguing with the on-field umpire regarding it.

This is not the first time Virat was involved in an animated chat with the umpires in the competition. Virat Kohli was docked 25 per cent of his match fee for excessive appealing during the match against Afghanistan.
Since it was Virat Kohli’s second offence since the introduction of the revised code in September 2016, the Indian skipper now has 2 demerit points. His first demerit point was added during a Test match against South Africa in January 2018.

According to rules, when a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. Two suspension points will result in ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player.
