Kingfisher East Bengal started the first half in an emphatic fashion as Willis Plaza played a fine ball to Haitian midfielder Wedson Anselme in the 3rd minute of the game, but Wedson's powerful volley came off the cross bar. The Red and Gold brigade continued to put pressure on the highlanders with Romeo Fernandes was making dangerous runs from the right and was combining really well with Rahul Bheke. In the 12th minute of the game Romeo earned a free kick just outside the box on the right. Abinas Ruidas delivered an inch perfect free kick but Willis Plaza failed to meet an open header.
After the first fifteen minutes, Aizawl started to have more grip on the game. Surprisingly, Trevor Morgan's team started to fall deep and that allowed Khalid Jamil's men to attack in numbers.
In the 27th minute, Alfred's thumping right-footer went just over the cross bar. Aizawl FC continued to use the flanks as both Romeo and Abinas started to become too much blunt on the widths of the ground. In the 38th minute, Ralte missed a golden opportunity to blast his shot at the back of the net as his shot went just wide.
East Bengal coach made two changes in the second half as Robin Singh and Didika Ralte came on for Romeo Fernandes and Abinas Ruidas. But Aizawl seemed determined to put further pressure on the Trevor Morgan's side.
Aizawl got their illusive goal in the 58th minute when Ralte tracked a back-header from Arnab Mondal and scored a fine goal to give the fans to go irrupted in joy. The goal gave Jamil's side to go on attack with much more confidence. Ugandan defender Ivan Bukenye too started to look shaky for the first time in the competition.
East Bengal got a great chance against the run of play in the 70th minute when Rahul Bheke made a measured cross from the right and Robin Singh's powerful header went straight to the hands of Albino Gomes.
Aizawl got a few golden opportunities to extend their lead but Kamo missed three consecutive chances to reflect the scoreline. Brandon missed a superb opportunity but Rehenesh came to the rescue.
The defeat of East Bengal would certainly help their arch rivals Mohun Bagan to breathe easy as a win in their next match will put them on the top of the points table.
