Huge concerns over Asia Cup 2022 in Sri Lanka as island’s political crisis deepens

Xtra Time Web Desk: There are huge concerns over staging the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 in Sri Lanka as the political crisis has been increasing with each passing day. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has called for an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing crisis.

Fresh rounds of violence broke out in the country on Monday, putting a huge question in hosting the Asia Cup 2022 in September.  Protests intensified in and around the country as a residence of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was set on fire on Monday. His decision to step down comes amid a raging agitation over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has pushed the island nation to the brink of collapse.

It is being expected that SLC themselves will agree to the suggestions of shifting Asia Cup to Dubai. Though Asian Cricket Council President and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has already declared that the final call on venue of Asia Cup will be taken on the side-lines of IPL 2022 Finals in Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile if the political situation does not improve, it could jeopardise Sri Lanka’s home itinerary. The island nation is supposed to host Australia and Pakistan starting from June. While the Aussies will play 2 Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is, the series against Pakistan will involve two tests only in July.
