BlackCaps captain Kane Williamson addressing the media virtually from Southampton on Wednesday.

Xtra Time Web Desk: New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is one of the nicest guys in world cricket. The BlackCaps batsman is respected worldwide for his image both on and off the cricket field. The New Zealand skipper shared his thoughts about the situation in India with respect to COVID-19 surge. According to Williamson it has been  “heartbreaking to see”.

“For us playing and the challenges that a bubble would face – clearly it became too great. We were well looked after in the bubble and for the first half of the tournament things were still intact, but clearly there were some breaches and the tournament couldn’t continue and the right decisions were made.”

Talking about his tendon injury that has been troubling him off late, Williamson said, “It’s improving, which is the main thing,”

“Everything I’ve heard from the people that know a lot more about it than I do is that it is slow to progress and certainly slow to go away entirely.

“Just managing it will be the focus, so that’s something that in this period of time I’ve been looking to do.”

Williamson hasn’t had a hit since his last Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) match at the start of the month and has a little while to go before he can practice properly with his Black Caps team-mates. And he isn’t worried about his lack of bat-on-ball action in recent weeks.

“I suppose with Covid and different isolations these days you tend to have a few gaps,” he said.

“In an ideal world you'd be wanting to train a little bit more, but we've got, I think, about 12 days or so of preparation here before our first test [starting on June 2].

“There will be a lot of excitement getting into that and adjusting to the conditions and the [Duke] ball,” signed off Williamson.
