GM R R Laxman wins Xtra Time All India Open Rapid FIDE Rating Chess Tournament

GM R R Laxman won the Xtra Time All India Open Rapid FIDE Rating Chess Tournament at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra on Thursday.

Kolkata: GM RR Laxman of Integral Coach Factory won Xtra Time All India Open Rapid Chess Tournament 2017. He scored 9.5 points out of maximum 10 Rounds.

FM Mitrabha Guha scored 8.5 points and secured 2nd position. Untitled Srijit Paul finished 3rd by scoring 8 points ahead of GM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury, because of a better tie break score. IM Somak Palit scored 7.5 points and secured 5th position. IM Prantik Roy scored 7 points and secured 8th position.

GM Neelotpal Das scored 7 points and secured 9th position. Playing competitive chess after three years, GM Dibyendu Barua also ended on seven points points but slipped to 19th with a poor finish in tie-break.

GM-elect IM Arghyadip Das also scored 7 points and secured 15thposition. IM Prantik Roy also scored 7 points and secured 8th position.

Talking about the tournament, GM RR Laxman felt it was a nice practice for him as he heads to Odisha to take part in a tournament featuring several Grand Masters.

“As you play a more number of games your concentration level as well as competitive skills improves a lot and you will be very fluent in the game. The more number of games you play the more you learn. This tournament I feel serves the purpose for that. I am coming to this tournament because it will give me intensive practice because I am proceeding to Odisha to take part in a Grand Master tournament.”

Former Bengal cricketer Sambaran Banerjee was the chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony.

According to Sambaran, “It’s a fabulous initiative from Xtra Time to organise such an event. It is wonderful to see so many talented kids participating in the tournament, playing alongside experienced players.”
