Ahead of FIFA U-15 World Cup, 2017 India U-17 Stars Share Advice With Young Colts
Anwar Ali, who has since established himself as an important player in Indian football, highlighted how competing internationally can shape a youngster’s development beyond the pitch. Drawing on his own World Cup experience, he said, “It's an important exposure for any youngster as you get to closely observe the playing styles, off-field demeanour and rigours of international football from your contemporaries. This exposure will help these kids grow both as professional players and as good human beings. After all, they are our future.”

XtraTime Webdesk: A World Cup appearance can change a young footballer’s life, and the members of India’s 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup squad know exactly what that experience feels like. With the Indian U-15 team preparing for its campaign at the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival, former players Abhijit Sarkar, Komal Thatal, Anwar Ali, and Dheeraj Singh have shared their memories and advice, hoping to inspire the next generation of Indian footballers.
India’s participation in the 2017 U-17 World Cup was a landmark occasion, as the country hosted the tournament for the first time. Although the team’s campaign ended in the group stage, the players gained valuable international experience and gave Indian fans several moments to remember. Now, almost nine years later, the youngsters of the U-15 squad have an opportunity to experience the same excitement and test themselves against international opposition.
For Abhijit Sarkar, who represented India in midfield during the 2017 tournament, wearing the national jersey at a World Cup was an unforgettable experience. He wants the current crop of players to step onto the pitch without fear and trust their preparation. Sarkar said, “Participating in a World Cup is a proud moment for every Indian”. He further added, “I just want the youngsters to play with full confidence, without any nervousness. I have immense faith in Bibiano sir that under his guidance, the team will produce very good results.”
Komal Thatal also urged the young footballers to make the most of their opportunity. Having experienced the pressure and excitement of a World Cup himself, he encouraged the players to enjoy the occasion rather than become overwhelmed by it. His message was simple: “Believe in yourselves, and most importantly, enjoy every moment of this incredible journey”.
Former India U-17 goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh also sent his best wishes to the young Colts, urging them to enjoy the opportunity without feeling pressured. “Just go out there, play your game, believe in yourselves, and enjoy every moment on the pitch. The whole nation will be rooting for you,” he said.
Recalling his own experience at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Dheeraj described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Singing the national anthem in front of more than 50,000 spectators remains one of his most cherished memories. He also believes the tournament changed how Indian parents viewed football, encouraging more families to support their children’s dreams of becoming professional footballers.
As the Blue Colts prepare for their World Cup challenge, the words of the 2017 generation serve as a reminder that the tournament is about more than results. It is also a chance to learn, grow and take another step forward for Indian football.
