Xtra Time Web Desk: Shreyas Iyer's journey in Test cricket has been fraught with difficulties, especially since his impressive debut against New Zealand three years ago in Kanpur. Once lauded for his century, Iyer’s struggles with short-pitched bowling and inconsistent performances have hampered his rise in the longest format. Not only have his numbers overseas been disappointing, but even at home, he has managed just 146 runs in his last eight innings over the past two years.

Earlier this year, Iyer faced further setbacks, being dropped from the Indian Test team and missing out on the BCCI's central contract. The 2024 Duleep Trophy presented him with a chance to regain form, but he accumulated only 104 runs in four innings, including a duck and a solitary half-century.

Speaking to The Telegraph, a BCCI official delivered a tough assessment, stating, "At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas in the Test team. His shot selection in Duleep, especially yesterday, has been a concern."

While Iyer still has the Irani Cup and the upcoming Ranji Trophy season to bounce back, his chances of making the Border-Gavaskar squad remain slim. Another official remarked, “Most likely he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home.”

In light of Iyer's recent struggles, his path back into the Indian Test team appears uncertain. However, with key domestic fixtures ahead, including the Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy, Iyer still has opportunities to rediscover his form and make a compelling case for selection. The upcoming months will be crucial in determining whether he can overcome his challenges and reestablish himself in the Test arena.
