FIFA World Cup 2022: Oliver Giroud scores brace as France beat Australia 4-1; Lewandowski misses’ penalty as Poland held by Mexico

Xtra Time Web Desk: Reigning champions France kickstarted their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign in style as they came from behind to thrash Australia 4-1 in Group D fixture at Al Janoub stadium on Tuesday night. A Rabiot (27’) Oliver Giroud (34’ & 71’) and Kylian Mbappe (68’) were on the scoresheet for Les Bleus while C Goodwin scored for Socceroos in the 9th minute.  

In another Group D fixture Denmark and Tunisia played out a goalless draw. Poland’s Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty against Mexico as both sides failed to open the deadlock in a Group C fixture. The result will give Argentina some breathing space after they were stunned by Saudi Arabia 1-2. The Asian side are on top of Group C while the Albiceleste are at the bottom of table.

France with the win is on top of Group D. They will continue their title defence against Denmark on Saturday, while Australia play Tunisia the same day. The winners of Group D will face the runner-up from Group C, containing Argentina, Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia. The runner-up in Group D will face the winners of Group C.
