FIFA World Cup 2022: Hee Chan Hwang’s late strike help South Korea beat Portugal 2-1; Uruguay crashes out despite 2-0 win over Ghana

Xtra Time Web Desk: A late strike (91’) from Hee-Chang Hwang saw South Korea defeat Portugal 2-1 in FIFA World Cup 2022 Group H clash at Education City stadium on Friday. In another Group H fixture, despite beating Ghana 2-0, Uruguay crashed out from the group stages. Portugal and South Korea went through to the next stages as top two teams from Group H.

South Korea needed a win to qualify for the next round. But the Asian side saw themselves trailing in the fifth minute after a goal from Ricardo Horta, who met a Diogo Dalot cross and hammered it home from close range.

Young-Gwon Kim gave the Taeguk Warriors a lifeline after pouncing on a bouncing ball to see the scores level 1-1 in the 27th minute.

Super-sub-Hwang scored the winner for South Korea in the 91st minute as he latched onto Heung-Min Son’s pass to slot past Diogo Costa.

Only twice before in their history had South Korea advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
