FBI investigates role of FIFA’s Sepp Blatter in bribery scandal

Blatter-with-HavelengeLONDON : FBI are investigating evidence indicating FIFA’s suspended president Sepp Blatter’s role in a

alleged $100mn( €66.2mn) bribes scandal.The BBC investigation made a allegation that sports marketing company ISL paid a total of 100 million to officials including ex-FIFA president Joao Havelange and former FIFA executive Ricardo Teixeira.

As a return  the company was granted of  television and marketing rights during the 1990s, the report said.Blatter, who says he will stand down as head of football’s world governing body in February 2016, declined to respond to any allegations against him.Blatter has maintained his stand that  he was unaware of any  payments, but a BBC reporter has  seen a letter letter obtained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States which casts doubt on his denial. The letter which is written  by  Havelange, talks about the payment. It also said that  Blatter had “full knowledge of all activities” and was “always apprised” of them. Blatter took over from Havelange as FIFA President in 1998. Havelange had to resign as honorary Fifa president over his role in the case but The BBC said Blatter had declined to respond to their allegations. Blatter, who was suspended in October for 90 days by FIFA’s ethics committee, is due to stand down in February.UEFA President Michel Platini was hopeful that this allegation on Blatter will clear him of his charges.US prosecutors are investigating several top football officials in a quest to root out graft at FIFA.
