Exclusive: Mohun Bagan gets a transfer boost, signs former East Bengal defender

Suman Chakravorty, Kolkata: Mohun Bagan gets a big boost in the transfer market as the Mariners have roped in former East Bengal and Chennaiyin FC right full-back Abhishek Das, moments after the youngster got surprisingly ‘unsold’ in the players draft for the season 4 of the Hero Indian Super League, confirmed by sources close to the player.

It left everyone in complete shock to see the Abhishek got unsold in the draft. His fellow mates too were in complete disbelief to to see him not getting a team. Though Mohun Bagan previously contacted him before the draft, Abhishek wanted to become a part of the ISL. The moment the Bagan officials saw the player to go unsold, they didn’t waste any time. It is learnt that the personal terms between the two parties have been agreed and Abhishek will sign on the contract paper by tonight.

Das graduated from the Tata Football Academy and signed for East Bengal of the I-League but was then sent on loan to Pailan Arrows, then known as the AIFF XI. After spending the 2010–11 at Arrows, he returned to East Bengal. The 2011–12 season started off well for Das as he was included in East Bengal’s 2011 Federation Cup squad. He made his first team debut for East Bengal against Mohammedan on 17 September 2011 during the Federation Cup.

Abhishek represented Chennaiyin FC for the 2014 Indian Super League. He was retained by the club to play for Chennaiyin in the 2015 Indian Super League season to help them winning the title.
