Xtra Time Web Desk: Raheem Sterling header saw England defeat Czech Republic 1-0 in EURO 2020 Group D clash at Wembley stadium on Tuesday night. The win saw Gareth Southgate’s team end group D on top as they set up a last 16 meeting with the runners in Group F.

Local lad Sterling was on target yet again for the Three Lions. The Manchester City footballer gave England the lead from a header off a cross from Jack Grealish in the 12th minute. Sterling also scored in England’s opening clash against Croatia.

England were without Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell, who had been forced to isolate after Scotland’s Billy Gilmour tested positive for coronavirus. The home side played an attacking brand of soccer which was lacking in their first two games. 19 year old Bukayo Saka was impressive on his first start in the competition.

England had a Jordan Henderson goal ruled out for offside in the closing moments.

It was the first time since 1966 World Cup; England recorded a clean sheet in the group stage of a major tournament. Harry Kane and his team will now have a stiffer challenge as they will meet either France, Germany, Portugal or Hungary in pre quarter finals next Tuesday.

As for Czech Republic, they ultimately go through in third, with Croatia grabbing second spot with a 3-1 win over Scotland at Hampden Park.
