File Pic.[/caption] Kolkata: It will be an historic occasion when Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson go for the toss at the Eden Gardens for the second test match. It will mark the 250th Test match on Indian soil. The iconic venue has so far hosted the most number of test matches in India. The test match between India and New Zealand will be the 40th test at the venue. The next venue in India to have held the most number of test matches is Feroz Shah Kotla with 33 test matches. The first test match at Eden Gardens was played between India and England in the year from January 05-08, 1934. The venue has seen many records being created over the years. As well it has seen many highs and lows in the history of test cricket. The 2001 series win against Australia was crafted at Eden Gardens. India under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly went into the test after conceding a defeat against the mighty Australians at Wankhede. Steve Waugh led Aussies were right on top of the Indians as they inflicted a follow on. International cricket saw one of the greatest fight back at the hallowed venue with Laxman and Dravid paving the way for a miraculous series leveling win. The venue also had witnessed its low. In 1999 during the Asian Test championship Pakistan went on to win in front of an empty Eden Gardens as there was crowd trouble which resulted in the authorities with the help of Kolkata police evacuated the crowd. Eden Gardens, always considered being the mecca of cricket here in India will see adding another feather in its cap as it hosts the second test match of the series. There will be an added incentive not just for the fans but also for the Indian team.Virat Kohli and his team will reclaim the ICC Test Rankings top spot from Pakistan if it wins the second Test against New Zealand starting on Friday in Kolkata. The victory in its 500th Test in Kanpur meant that India is now one victory away from reclaiming the ICC Test Championship mace from Pakistan. India had entered the three-match series against the Kiwis, trailing Pakistan by one point and needed to win the series to move ahead of its traditional rival. With a number of events lined up by the Cricket Association of Bengal to mark the special occasion, fans will hope to see the rain Gods stay away for the next week. Former Indian captain Kapil Dev will do the honours of ringing the Lord's-like Eden Gardens bell for the first time to signal the start of the second cricket Test between India and New Zealand in Kolkata on 30 September.
