Internet Desk: India’s ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s participation in the forthcoming Asian Gymnastics Championships 2017 looks to be in serious doubts, following an injury (an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury) to her knees during training at the National training camp at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

The 23 year old gymnast underwent an operation in Mumbai by reknowned orthopedics surgeon Dr. Anant Joshi.

Dipa, who missed a medal at the Rio Olympics by a whisker, suffered the injury during training on Sunday at the national camp. She was reportedlypracticing Handspring Rudi (a vault variant) when she ended up hurting her knee ligament. She was immediately flown to Mumbai to consult Dr Anant Joshi, who successfully operated her knee.

Dr Joshi, it may be recalled has earlier operated famous sports personalities including cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar.

Dipa tweeted about the development on Tuesday. She tweeted, “Hi everyone, ek update hai. Mujhe recently practice mein injury hua aur ACL ka surgery hua hai. Rehab suru hai, jaldi wapis aaungi!:))”

According to National Coach Minera Begum, “Dipa has been suggested a week’s rest. Quite a few international events are lined up this year starting with the Asian Championships next month. Hopefully she will recover in time for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games coming up next year. The good thing for her is the injury will not affect her from doing the Produnova vault.”

ACL is generally considered to be a long term injury, and Dipa, in all probabilities will be ruled out of next month’s Asian Gymnastics Championship meet. The trails for Asian Championships have been scheduled for April 17 and 18 but her participation at the even looks highly unlikely now.
