‘Our manager signed the new contract that ties him to Atletico Madrid for two more seasons, until June 30th, 2020,’ said Atletico in a statement.

‘The much-awaited news by the Atletico fans is thus confirmed, something that [club president] Enrique Cerezo, [chief executive] Miguel Angel Gil and Simeone himself have always hinted at in their public statements.

‘He started his seventh campaign as Atletico manager this season, the coach in La Liga with the most time at the helm of his team, and only Arsene Wenger (at Arsenal) beats him in terms of elite European sides.’

The 47-year-old was due to be out of contract next summer but has now secured his future at Wanda Metropolitano.

He originally signed a long-term deal until 2020 but cut his deal by two years despite insisting he was still fully committed to the club.

Simeone has led the Spanish giants to five major trophies since taking over the reins in 2011.

Atletico have won one La Liga title, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, Europa League and UEFA Cup during Simeone’s time in charge.
