Goalkeeper needs to improve on his goal-kicks

debjitintmat20 Internet Desk: Atletico de Kolkata goalkeeper Debjit Majumder is having a decent Indian Super League (ISL) season so far. The 28 year old goalkeeper has impressed everyone with his reflexes and outing in the ensuing tournament. The Atletico goalkeeper has so far conceded 13 goals from 12 matches. The goalkeeper from Hooghly has shown tremendous consistency under the bar and is proving to be a striker’s nightmare. xtratime.in caught up with three former goalkeepers – Atanu Bhattacharya, Debashis Mukherjee and Arpan Dey to analyse his performance in the last two years.

Atanu Bhattacharya

Atanu1 Former India goalkeeper Atanu Bhattacharya is impressed with the consistency shown by Debjit under the bar. The former All Star goalkeeper would like to give credit to Debjit’s courage and fighting spirit for his rise. His eagerness to compete at the top level can see him go distance in Indian football, feel Atanu. The former goalkeeper feels, Debjit needs to work on his outing to negate his height.

According to Atanu, “What I like about him is his mental strength and courage which is required most by any goalkeeper. He is not afraid to take any risk. His reflexes and agility under the bar sets him apart from the other goalkeepers. But he needs to work a lot on his outing since he will have a lot of disadvantage in aerial balls against strikers with good height.”

He also added, “Another area he needs to work upon is his goal kicks. In modern day football an attack begins from the goalkeeper and he needs to be accurate with his goal kicks.”

Debashis Mukherjee

Debashis Former Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Debashis Mukherjee too feels Debjit has improved immensely over the years. He attributed Debjit’s recent rise towards his courage and mental toughness. Debashis, who has coached Debjit for seven years along with Subrata Pal feels for him to be judged a better goalkeeper, he needs to play for the country.

According to Debashis, “He needs to keep his calm as a goalkeeper. We saw him lose temper yesterday in the match against FC Goa when he rushed at Jofre. He shouldn’t lose his temper as he is the last line of defence for his team. He should be more composed under the goalpost.”

Arpan Dey

ArpanMohun Bagan goalkeeper coach Arpan Dey reckons Debjit’s dedication towards the game has brought him where he is now. Arpan is impressed with his eagerness to do well. “Although his reflexes and outing is brilliant, but there are still a few areas in his game that needs to be looked after. He needs slight improvement in saving the 2nd ball. I give him extra training on this and he is working really hard to recover quickly after making a save. Also he needs an improvement in his goal kicks and it will only improve with practice. What I like the most about him is his discipline. He is ready to practice that extra hour to do well,” said Arpan.
