Xtratime Webdesk: Mumbai Indians could be heading into IPL 2027 with more than just a new-look coaching setup. The franchise’s biggest decision could revolve around who leads the team, with Rohit Sharma emerging as a possible short-term solution at a time when the five-time champions are preparing for a transition.
Rohit’s return to the captaincy conversation comes after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for Mumbai Indians, who finished ninth and missed the playoffs. The franchise has since made significant changes to its support structure, with Kieron Pollard taking over as head coach. In such a period of change, Rohit’s experience could offer MI an element of continuity.
Rohit Sharma knows the franchise better than most and led Mumbai Indians to all five of their IPL titles. His familiarity with the dressing room, senior players and the demands of leading MI makes him an attractive option if the franchise wants stability for the immediate future.
But this need not necessarily be a long-term solution. Mumbai Indians also have a potential succession plan to consider, with Tilak Varma increasingly viewed as a player who could eventually take on greater leadership responsibility. A season under Rohit could give the younger batter time to grow into that role without being rushed into it.
At the same time, Rohit is not the only experienced option available to MI. Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah bring leadership credentials of their own, while Tilak represents the possibility of building for the future.
That leaves Mumbai Indians with a crucial choice, opt for an established leader to steady the ship or accelerate the transition towards the next generation.
With Pollard beginning a new chapter in the coaching setup, Rohit could provide a familiar link to MI’s successful past. For Mumbai Indians, IPL 2027 may therefore be less about choosing between the old and the new, and more about using the old guard to build the next era.
