India’s T20I Schedule Concerns Gautam Gambhir Despite New Zealand Series Win

Xtratime Webdesk: India may have sealed the New Zealand T20I series 3-2, but the result has not erased a concern that India head coach Gautam Gambhir wants his players to address: staying ready for a format the team does not play often enough.
The head coach’s message after the fifth T20I was a reminder of the work required between international assignments. India had raced to a 3-0 lead by winning the first three matches, only for New Zealand to respond with victories in the last two. The hosts won the finale in Hamilton by seven wickets, chasing India’s 191/8 with 195/3 in 18 overs.
That finish showed that a series victory does not mean every box has been ticked. India had the quality to take the contest, but the late defeats also exposed areas needing attention. Gambhir, however, did not blame the results on a lack of T20 games. His point was about preparation between series.
“We know that we don't play enough T20 cricket, and we've got a month off now. So, make sure we stay in shape and prepare well for Sri Lanka,” he told the players in the dressing room.
India’s next T20I assignment is a three-match home series against Sri Lanka in December. With a month away from international action, Gambhir wants players to maintain their fitness and keep working on their game rather than allow the break to disrupt preparation.
The issue extends beyond physical conditioning. Regular T20I fixtures help players stay attuned to the pace of the format, while allowing team management to assess combinations and build cohesion. When those opportunities are limited, individual discipline becomes even more important.
Gambhir also urged the squad not to become complacent, stressing that India must keep growing and approach every opponent seriously. The 3-2 result is secured; the bigger challenge now is ensuring the team returns for Sri Lanka sharp, fit and ready from the first ball.
