From U-19 World Cup Hero to ODI Debut As India Captain: Shubman Gill's New Zealand Nostalgia
From a mesmerising night at the Bay Ball Ground, Mount Maunganui, winning the World Cup and getting the Player of the Series award, to getting the No. 227 ODI cap from the Captain Cool MS Dhoni in Hamilton, to getting prepared to lead the Indian team for the ODI series, New Zealand will always have a special place in Shubman’s heart.

XtraTime Webdesk: Shubman Gill has a pretty long history with New Zealand. He opened up about this to the press and reminisced about the early days of his cricketing journey. Gill became a household name after India won the 2018 U19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Gill made his international/ODI debut in the same country. Now, Gill is ready to make a mark as the captain of the Indian team. The ODI series against the Kiwis, hence, becomes an important barometer to rate the new skipper of the team.
At the pre-series press conference, Gill said, “We won the U19 World Cup here. I have very good memories. I made my international debut here in New Zealand. Whenever I come here, I feel very good.”
However, the pressure is high this time, as Gill is no longer the teenage batter who came here to build his name and let people know who Shubman Gill is. Now, as captain, Gill must take charge of the Indian ship, steer it through the challenges and guide the team to a series victory. In just 11 months, the ODI World Cup 2027 will start, and Gill needs to aim to win the cup, so this series can be the perfect chance for him to get insights into where the team needs change, which ability the team lacks, and more.
Regarding the preparations for the World Cup, he said, “I think the more we play at different venues, the more experience we get, and that will help us in the World Cup." When Gill was questioned about New Zealand’s condition and the young bowling department of India, he said, “From the T20 series, we have seen that there has been good bounce here with the new ball, which has challenged both the bowling and batting teams. So, both teams will face good challenges, and it will be a good challenge for us too. It is a young bowling attack, but we have all the qualities to succeed here. Hopefully, we will learn and do well.”
The middle order has always been a problem for Team India, and Gill was also asked about the 5th and 6th positions of Team India; for this question, he said that the no. 5 and no. 6 are a bit flexible and the top four are pretty fixed.
While speaking about the ability to win the series with the young team, he said, “I feel that any Indian team that steps onto the ground is capable of defeating any team. Young players will gain a lot of confidence if they perform here. We will also gain confidence that if, for any reason, we don't have the team we want for the World Cup, our squad can still defeat any team in any condition. In that context, if we win the series here, it will be a big confidence booster for us.”
As Shubman Gill returns to the land where his journey began, the focus is now on how he leads India in a new chapter of his career. From a young prodigy to the captain of the national side, New Zealand has witnessed many of his firsts. Now, Gill will hope to create another set of memorable moments on this tour.
